A Gluten-Free Haven at Evergreen Indian Restaurant in Eugene
A Gluten-Free Haven at Evergreen Indian Restaurant in Eugene
Nestled in the heart of Eugene, Oregon, Evergreen Indian Restaurant offers an authentic taste of the subcontinent that’s particularly welcoming to gluten-free diners. With approximately half their menu featuring gluten-free options, this restaurant stands out as a rare gem for those avoiding wheat and it’s gluten containing counterparts. During my recent visit, I sampled several dishes that showcased both the restaurant’s gluten-free range and commitment to authentic flavors—from stellar standouts to items that left me wanting more.
The Gluten-Free Star: Masala Dosa
Without question, the Masala Dosa stands as my personal favorite and represents exactly why Evergreen is such a treasure for gluten-free diners. This naturally gluten-free South Indian classic arrives as a magnificent golden crepe made from rice and lentil batter, impossibly thin and wonderfully crispy, wrapped around a filling that delivers a perfect myriad of flavors. Each bite combines the satisfying crunch of the dosa with the aromatic spiced potato mixture inside.
Fair warning to fellow diners: keep an eye out for the hot red mini pepper cleverly hidden in the center—it packs a fiery punch that can catch you off guard! (I picked it out once I discovered it). The dish comes accompanied by sambar, a lentil-based soup that proved to be sweet, creamy, and the perfect complement to the dosa’s bold flavors. This combination alone makes Evergreen worth the visit.
Appetizers: A Cross-Contamination Concern
The Mushroom Pakora served as my appetizer, delivering golden-brown fritters that were competently prepared but admittedly a little plain on their own. However, I must note an important caveat for gluten-sensitive diners: while the pakora themselves appear to be gluten-free, I’m pretty sure they’re fried in a shared fryer with wheat-containing items, though I could not get a clear answer from the staff on this point. If you have celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity, you may want to skip these or inquire further about their frying practices. For those who can tolerate potential cross-contamination, the accompanying sauces transform the experience entirely, providing the tangy and spicy kicks needed to elevate these crispy mushroom bites. The green coriander-mint sauce was my favorite, and added a lovely cooling balance to an otherwise spicy meal.
Meat Course: Boti Kabab Brings the Heat
The Boti Kabab proved delicious but came with serious spice credentials—this dish doesn’t mess around with heat levels! The chunks of marinated meat were expertly grilled and bursting with flavor, albeit the lamb was a tad on the tough side. However, what truly elevated the dish was the creamy, spicy, tomato-based dipping sauce served alongside. This slightly sweet and very rich accompaniment provided the perfect counterbalance to the kabab’s intensity and shouldn’t be missed.
The Heavy Hitter: Saag Paneer
While the Saag Paneer delivered on taste with its classic combination of creamy spinach and soft paneer cheese, it proved too rich for my personal preference. The dish arrived swimming in oil, creating what looked like a heart attack in a bowl. Though undeniably flavorful, the excessive richness overshadowed the delicate balance of spices and made it difficult to finish.
Final Thoughts
Evergreen Indian Restaurant stands out as a true find for gluten-free diners in Eugene, with its plethora of naturally gluten-free options covering about half their menu. When they nail it—as with the exceptional Masala Dosa—the experience is truly memorable and showcases how Indian cuisine can be naturally accommodating to gluten-free needs. The restaurant shows promise with dishes like the Boti Kabab, though diners should come prepared for generous spice levels.
While some items like the Saag Paneer may benefit from a lighter touch, and cross-contamination questions remain around certain fried items, the abundance of clearly gluten-free choices makes Evergreen worth exploring for anyone craving authentic Indian flavors without the wheat. For gluten-free diners tired of limited options, this restaurant offers a refreshing change with its extensive selection.

Traveling to Florence: Homegrown Public House & Brewery
Homegrown Public House & Brewery in Florence, OR
Finding truly safe gluten-free dining options can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack, especially when you’re craving comfort food classics. That’s what makes Homegrown Public House & Brewery in Florence, Oregon such a refreshing discovery. This coastal brewery has quietly become a beacon for gluten-free diners, offering not just dedicated menu options, but something fairly rare in the restaurant world: a dedicated gluten-free fryer.
A Menu That Actually Gets It
What immediately impresses about Homegrown is their extensive gluten-free menu offerings. This isn’t a restaurant that grudgingly offers a single sad salad for gluten-free diners. Instead, they’ve created a wide array of options that span the full spectrum of comfort food cravings. From hearty salads to burgers and sandwich choices available on gluten-free buns, they’ve thoughtfully adapted their menu to be inclusive without sacrificing flavor or creativity.
The menu also features some delicious-looking gluten-free tacos and even gluten-free breaded shrimp—items that are nearly impossible to find safely prepared elsewhere. This variety means you could easily return multiple times and have completely different dining experiences.
The Game-Changer: Truly Gluten-Free French Fries
What truly sets Homegrown apart from nearly every other restaurant you’ll visit is their dedicated gluten-free fryer. No shared oil with breaded items—just pure, crispy potato perfection. This attention to detail demonstrates a level of understanding about gluten-free dining that’s unfortunately rare in the industry.
The Standout: Gluten-Free Clam Chowder
The star of my meal was undoubtedly the gluten-free clam chowder, which may very well be the best clam chowder I’ve ever tasted. This isn’t the typical heavy, flour-thickened soup you might expect. Instead, it’s warming and savory, thick and creamy yet incredibly fresh and homemade tasting. The chef has crafted the perfect medley of herbs and richness that creates layers of flavor in every spoonful.
Fair warning: this chowder is very filling, and I’d recommend sharing this dish unless you’re absolutely ravenous. The portion is generous, and the richness means a little goes a long way. It’s the kind of comfort food that makes you close your eyes and savor each bite.

The Mixed Bag: “No Bun Intended” Cheeseburger Salad
The creatively named “No Bun Intended” Cheeseburger Salad caught my attention with its promise of deconstructed burger flavors. The combination of grass-fed burger patty, mixed greens, cheese, and housemade pickles sounded like a complex and nuanced flavor soiree that would deliver on both creativity and taste.
However, even with all the varied textures and flavors, this dish was somehow rather plain. The pickled vegetables were quite sour, dominating the palate, and the dish desperately needed something sweet as a counterpart to balance the acidity. I opted for the balsamic vinaigrette, but in hindsight, the honey mustard might elevate the dish by providing that missing sweet element.
One delightful bonus was the french fry “croutons”—really just a handful of those perfectly safe gluten-free fries scattered throughout the salad. It was the perfect amount of fries for me: not too many to overwhelm the greens, not too few to feel shortchanged. These crispy additions added texture and that satisfying potato flavor that made the salad feel more substantial.

The Bottom Line
Homegrown Public House & Brewery deserves recognition in the gluten-free dining community. The dedicated fryer alone makes this worth the visit, and when they nail a dish like their clam chowder, it’s truly exceptional.
For gluten-free diners visiting the Oregon coast, Homegrown Public House & Brewery should definitely be on your list. Just make sure to save room for that incredible chowder—and don’t forget to enjoy those worry-free french fries!
